High & central high atlas
Overview
Toubkal National Park, about 70 kilometers south of Marrakech, was named after Jebel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, and is visited on our High Atlas hiking trips. The Mgoun massif is located around 180 kilometers south-east of Marrakech in the Central High Atlas and is a less popular hiking destination than the Toubkal massif, which is also located in the Central High Atlas.
Our suggested itineraries for hiking range from 2 to 9 days (with a maximum of 8 nights spent in tents or mountain lodges), and six of them include more off-the-beaten-path paths and wilder campsites. Due to its greater distance from Marrakech and off-the-beaten-path location, the Mgoun massif is less traversed than Toubkal National Park, making it ideal for those seeking for more secluded environments. However, the Toubkal massif is still less popular among tourists than the European Alps.
Example trekking programmes:
- Jebel Toubkal summit, 2 days;
- Jebel Toubkal summit, 4 days circuit;
- Jebel Toubkal summit, 5 days linear;
- Jebel Toubkal summit, 7 days linear remote;
- High Atlas discovery (no summit), 3 days linear;
- Jebel Mgoun summit, 3 days circuit remote;
- Jebel Mgoun summit, 5 days circuit remote;
- Jebel Mgoun summit & Atlas crossing, 5 days linear remote;
- Jebel Mgoun summit & Gorges, 9 days circuit remote;
- Crossing the Mgoun massif (no summit), 4 days linear remote.
Important information:
An average day on the trail will take around 6-7 hours, and there will be plenty of opportunities to relax and have lunch in the shade along the way.
- A summit day’s walk, though, may take anywhere from 9-11 hours, and it’s better to get going bright and early to take advantage of the weather.
- All excursions include meals and accommodations in bivouac tents for two, mountain refuges, or cozy inns;
- Planning on spending a day in the mountains? Plan on spending a day getting there and back.
- Unless otherwise specified, we will begin and end each trip in Marrakech.
- Between the months of June and October, tours are available;
- Since we won’t be spending too much time at such a high altitude, we shouldn’t have to worry about getting altitude sickness (above 3500m). It is crucial that you listen to our guides and keep up with the pace they set since they have been trained to spot any issues. Although no trip is difficult and is well beyond the capabilities of a moderately strong hill-walker, your experience will be much enhanced if you are in pretty good physical shape before embarking on it with us.
If you’d rather stay in a hotel and go on a series of guided day hikes rather than do a full-on camping journey, please get in touch with us for further details on how to set that up.
