Tour Overview

mountains, valleys, berber villages & sand dunes with deluxe desert camp

Spending time in the Sahara and enjoying a desert stay might be exhausting, but this is the most relaxing option. The amount of time spent in the car each day is manageable, and there will be plenty of opportunity for sightseeing and other pursuits.

Tent camp for two nights and stay at B&Bs for the other two (one night either side of the desert). Stopping for two nights at inns en route allows us time for brief hikes in the palm oasis and Atlas mountain foothills, either alone or with a guide (a guide can be arranged with the guest-house in advance). You may take a longer camel-trek or stroll in the desert with a picnic lunch if you stay at the camp for two nights.

Guests may enjoy dune-boarding, games, hammocks, outdoor leisure areas, and sunset aperitifs on the dunes at this camp. Inquire about upgrading to a stay in the remote Nomadic Camp for a more personalized vacation.

Morocco Itinerary

Ride in a 4x4 with a guide and driver all the way from Marrakech to the palm grove at Agdz, in the Draa River Valley. Enjoy the thrill of driving through verdant valleys and quaint Berber towns as you make your way through the High Atlas Mountains via Morocco's highest primary road pass, located at an altitude of 2,260 meters. You may get to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, by first traveling to Telouet (to see the Kasbah Glaoui), and then following the path of the gorgeous Ounila Valley. The next step is to go to Ouarzazate before heading through the Anti-Atlas Mountains to meet the Draa River where it begins at Agdz. Spend the night in a kasbah guesthouse among the Agdz palm grove.

From Agdz, go to the Erg Chigaga sand dunes and the Deluxe Desert Camp in the Moroccan Sahara. The road travels down the valley of the Draa River, which is the longest river in Morocco and passes past beautiful palm oasis and ancient kasbahs on its way to its terminus at M'hamid El Ghezlane. Two hours of off-road driving from M'hamid will get you to the Deluxe Desert Camp, where you can clean up in your en suite tent before enjoying an ice cold drink above the swaying dunes. Behold the sun go down from a lofty vantage point. After supper, gather around the campfire and listen to some traditional tunes. Stay in the deluxe tent city for the next two nights.

A day of relaxation in the Sahara Desert. The highest dunes may be reached on foot following a camel trip out of camp in the morning, but you can also choose to lounge about camp and have breakfast. This today's lunch is on the house. Take the 4x4 out for a spin, but be sure to get back to camp in time for happy hour before the sun goes down. Supper and tunes by the fire. Again, we'll be spending the night in the posh tent city.

After a quick breakfast at camp, you'll depart for the trip to Ouarzazate, where you'll spend the night at a guesthouse close to the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Use an alternate exit from the desert to reach the pavement near Foum Zguid (after 3hrs off-road drive via a dried river course, the vast dried salt flats at Lake Iriqui, and imposing mountain ridges – arguably some of the finest remote scenery in Morocco). Take the path that leads north via Tazenakht and the furthest regions of the Anti-Atlas. A little while later, you'll arrive at your guesthouse, a renovated kasbah, along the Ounila Valley.

Take a morning drive to Marrakech and aim to be there by midday. Return to Day 1's crossing of the High Atlas Mountains and go back north.
